About Joshua Darden

Joshua Darden created his first typeface at the age of 15, when the grunge movement held sway over much of the graphic design community. His work found a home at David Carson's newly-founded Garagefonts foundry, with which he continues to maintain a relationship. In the years since, he has collaborated with clients in a variety of industries to create rich, communicative typography. From 2001 to 2004, he worked under Jonathan Hoefler & Tobias Frere-Jones, in whose studio he developed designs for a broad range of commercial and cultural institutions. His work there for Tiffany & Company received a Certificate of Excellence from the 365:AIGA Annual Design Competition.

Joshua has developed custom typefaces for dozens of Latin-based languages, Cyrillic, and Greek. He has lectured at the University of California at Santa Barbara, has sat on panels at the TypeCon and South by Southwest Interactive conferences, juried the Type Directors Club Type Design Competition, and visited the Rhode Island School of Design as a Guest Critic.

In addition to serving as Chief Designer of the studio, Joshua is an adjunct professor at Parsons School of Design. In his free time, he is an avid amateur photographer and an unabashed consumer of media: collecting ephemera, publications, books, and cheesy Europop music.
